Azercosmos held panel session on "Space Technology for Disaster Management: Case Studies"

Azercosmos held a panel session on "Space Technology for Disaster Management: Case Studies" at COP29. The session brought together space experts to discuss the critical role of satellite technology in disaster prevention.   


The session was moderated by Fidan Behbudova, Head of PR, Communication, and Media at Azercosmos, who introduced the panelists and led the discussions. The distinguished panelists included: 

  • Prof. Teodoro Valente, President of the Italian Space Agency (ASI)
  • Chris Botha, Strategic Director - Water, Fugro
  • Lorant Czaran, Chief, UN-SPIDER Programme, United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA)
  • Dr. Marcia Alvarenga, Head of the International Cooperation Office, Brazilian Space Agency (AEB) 

The panelists discussed the significance of space technologies, especially satellite imagery, in managing natural disasters. The discussion covered a broad range of topics, including:

  • The application of Earth Observation data for methane emissions detection
  • The use of satellites for monitoring polar areas and water resources
  • Forest monitoring and fire detection
  • The role of satellites in disaster prevention, particularly in early warning systems


In addition, the experts analyzed several case studies where satellite technology played a pivotal role in disaster management, including:

  • Earthquakes in Turkey, Iran, and Iraq
  • Land subsidence in Guatemala
  • Landslides in the Swiss Alps
  • Flooding in Mozambique
  • Oil spills in Italy


The panel highlighted how satellite imagery can provide timely, accurate data to enhance decision-making and response strategies during natural disasters. The panelists also emphasized the importance of international collaboration and knowledge sharing to maximize the potential of space technology for global disaster management.
