On October 21, 2025, an event titled “Opportunities from Space: 10 Years of Contributions of Our Space Observation to Socio-Economic Development” was held by Azercosmos.
The event brought together representatives from government agencies, the private sector, academic researchers, and media representatives. As part of the program, a panel session titled "The Contribution of Space-Based Observation Services to Azerbaijan’s Socio-Economic Development" was held. The panel discussed the practical applications, real-world experiences, and outcomes of imagery obtained via the Azersky satellite, across various sectors including agriculture, ecology, urban planning, defense, and more.
It was emphasized that the launch of the Azersky satellite marked the beginning of a new era in Azerbaijan’s space industry.
“With the launch of the Azersky satellite in 2014, we acquired our first national capabilities in Earth remote sensing. This satellite has made a tangible contribution to decision-making processes in dozens of fields — from agriculture to ecology, from urban planning to national security,” said Dunay Bədirkhanov, Chair of the Board of Azercosmos (a/g).
He highlighted that over 80,000 satellite images have been collected in the archive during Azersky’s operational period. These images have been widely used in decision-making processes based on Earth observation, in the reconstruction of liberated territories, the planning of infrastructure projects, and the assessment of land and water resources.
The strategic importance of satellite data extends beyond economics to national security. In particular, the Azersky satellite played a critical role during the 44-day Patriotic War and in the subsequent reconstruction process.
The event also underlined that Azercosmos has not limited itself to providing satellite services. Significant steps have also been taken in training a new generation of specialists, supporting scientific research, and building a robust space education infrastructure. The Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Center, established for this purpose, has already supported nearly 1,000 projects. Among them are around 30 projects in agriculture, ecology, and environmental protection implemented under the “Great Return” State Program.
Additionally, recent developments regarding the production of the Azersky-2 satellite were shared during the event. Initial steps toward the satellite’s production have already been taken. The design and engineering phases at the Spacecraft Development Center have been completed. The new satellite is planned to be launched into orbit by SpaceX.
Azerbaijan is now recognized as a reliable member of the global space ecosystem, and is among the countries exporting satellite solutions to international markets.
