Azercosmos' satellite solutions helped save 500 lives in Kyrgyzstan Media Brief

In collaboration with the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Kyrgyz Republic, Azercosmos has provided advanced digital satellite solutions to assess and mitigate natural disaster risks.

Specifically, the high-precision Digital Elevation Model (DEM) developed by Azercosmos played a pivotal role in preventing a potential disaster in Kyrgyzstan, ultimately helping to save hundreds of lives.

DEM is a geographic data model that digitally represents terrain elevation and is used to accurately map the structure and shape of landforms. Based on satellite imagery analysis and additional monitoring data, it was determined that preventive measures against the overflow of a mountain lake in Kyrgyzstan’s Issyk-Kul region were not feasible, and nearby villages faced a severe flood risk. Acting on this data, Kyrgyz authorities immediately organized the evacuation of residents from high-risk areas. Just four days after the evacuation, the anticipated flood occurred. However, thanks to these timely measures, 500 lives were saved.

Kyrgyzstan is home to over 2,000 mountain lakes, with 320 posing significant risks of emergencies. The overflow of these lakes, located in high-altitude areas, can have widespread impacts across the Central Asia region. One of the main drivers of such disasters is the increasing vulnerability of mountain lakes due to climate change. Rising temperatures accelerate glacier melting, causing lake levels to reach critical thresholds. For instance, detailed satellite monitoring of high-risk areas and strengthening the safety structures of these lakes could help prevent similar disasters in the future. Digital Elevation Models and satellite data provide highly accurate disaster management predictions, enabling significant savings in both human and financial resources.
